The not-so-secret truth of Mardi Gras is that most eating and drinking does not revolve around bars or restaurants, but rather at homes and along parade routes, consumed on the go and while socializing — plucked off of party tables or purchased from the indispensable vendors that line Claiborne Avenue. The new cafe in the Rink shopping center is setting up a pop-up in the parking garage before and during the parades this year (entrance on Washington Avenue). Grab and go food includes king cake, meatball subs, Cuban sandwiches, and kid-friendly PB&Js — there’s also a frozen pear and lime cocktail in addition bloody marys, canned cocktails, beer, and nonalcoholic drinks.

The absolutely delightful Flour Moon Bagels is a sort-of one-stop shop this Carnival season, offering bagel platters, hot and iced coffee carafes, and 1/2 gallons of its specialty frozen cocktail — a delicious combination of gin, Aperol, bergamot, orange, and grapefruit juice.
