PLATEAU —27-year-old Laurier East Californian-Mexican restaurantEl Zaziummm有克羅sed its doors, according to Nightlife. It was known for serving what was perhaps Montreal’s largest sandwich, Le Monstre, which featured an entire chicken(deboned, obviously — around two pounds of meat) in bread with tomatoes, lettuce, guacamole, and cheese, and clocked in around 4,000 calories. As the existence of that sandwich might suggest, Zaziummm wasn’t exactly the pinnacle of Montreal’s Mexican dining options, even if it was a mainstay. With a gaudy, sombrero-laden decor, it hailed from a previous era of cheesy, served-with-fries “Mexican” cuisine that has generally faded in popularity in recent times — Nightlife also noted that it closed “amidst general indifference”. A farewell note on Facebook thanks customers, but doesn’t give a reason for the shutter.

MILE END —The expansion experiment from St-Henri’sTacos Victoris over, as the taqueria has closed down its location on Laurier near St-Urbain. It lasteda little over a year, but was never terribly busy, on a strip that seemed to favour coffee shops and higher-end dining. In a comment on Facebook, the owners note that the landlord reportedly wanted to carry out renovations.
VILLAGE —Sainte-Catherine steak stapleSteak House Villagehasdeparted its large premiseson the corner of Visitation, one of very few older, formal, non-chain dining rooms in the hood, which is rapidly welcoming hotter, younger things. No reason was given beyond the standard “we were forced to close”.
LITTLE ITALY —Charming Little Italy Portuguese bakery and sandwich spotLa Fora有克羅sed on St-Laurent due to “unforeseen circumstances”, although a sign in the window indicates that owners Priscilla and Tania Pancheco are hoping to find a new location. In the meantime, they’ll still do catering and events.
