In South Korea, takeout and delivery is already ingrained as a necessary element of dining culture. The clanging of the tofu lady’s bell and the folksy yells of “gimbaaaaap” from the sellers of those colorful bite-sized slices of rice and vegetables wrapped in dried seaweed still resonate through even Seoul’s most exclusive and upscale neighborhoods.
Multiple large, full-color glossy food delivery directories the size of phone books are delivered to apartment units in Seoul and serve as the analog equivalent of food delivery apps. For a cuisine that’s famous for convivial, communal dining in the form of Korean BBQ, Korean culture is exceptionally well equipped for dining in.
This culture, of course, carries over to LA’s Koreatown, where the city’s dizzying array of Korean food options find themselves in styrofoam boxes atop oil drums surrounded by huddled auto mechanic workers, or spread out on desks of back offices in the Fashion District, to white collar offices throughout the city where hustlers and go-getters tuck into some of the best takeout food the city has to offer.
