In the landscape of mixed drinks, cocktails often hog the limelight. But their miniature counterparts are often just as thoughtfully conceived and curated. And with inflation causing cocktail prices to spike from the mid-teens to $20, shots and shooters can be a much more affordable alternative.

From classics to original concoctions, here are the restaurants and bars around D.C. putting a little extra care and creativity into their smallest sippers.

Tiki On 18th

Adams Morgan’s treasured tiki perch offers miniature versions of its “Zombie” and “Rain Killer” cocktails to pair with its Filipino fare. Served in a miniature gold pineapple, the “Zombie” shot is a mix of rum, lemon, orange, Curacao, grenadine, and absinthe (the menu suggests taking an Uber home after one of these). The equally tropical “Make It Rain” shot combines vodka, lime, orange, pineapple, and bitters.

McClellan's Retreat

Shooters are designed to be a communal experience at Dupont’sessential, date night-friendly watering hole. At least two people at the table must participate and they must do the same one. The bar’s “Red Headed Madam” (Henry Mckenna sour mash, Jagermeister, cranberry cacao syrup) is a take on the ’90s shooter that goes by another name. “Greenish Tea” is a more tropical version of the tea-colored shooter, made with Henry Mckenna sour mash whiskey, grapefruit liquor, mango vinegar, and sparkling lemon soda. Finally, “It’s Amaro!!” is a straight shot of Vecchio Amaro, served at a super chilly — negative 20 degrees — temperature.

Chicken + Whiskey

This local Peruvian chicken chain’s four shot offerings traverse the flavor spectrum. A green tea delivers a sour punch with a mixture of whisky, peach, and citrus, while a pickleback shot uses house-made brine as a salty chaser to a shot of whisky. Odes to sugary-and-salty childhood snacks come in the form of a PB&J shot (peanut butter and jelly whiskey) and “Cinnamon Toast Crunch Remix” (rumchata and cinnamon mezcal). A new Navy Yard outpost joined the original 14th Street NW location this summer.

A cocktail-sized version is also available. London-based Swingers is opening a second D.C. location in Navy Yard early next year.

DAIKAYA Izakaya

Hazy orbs of sake float atop glasses of beer at Chinatown’s beloved izakaya. The shot-sized spheres filled with raspberry-yuzu sake are created via a molecular gastronomy technique that chef Katsuya Fukushima learned while working at Spain’s (now-closed) experimental showpiece El Bulli. The beer component is made with Sapporo beer, a splash of homemade ginger beer, and a dash of bitters.
