With D.C.officially liftingthe majority of its service restrictions for all bars, nightclubs, and music venues on Friday, June, 11, the drinking public is expected to show out in full force. Ever since restaurants in the city returned to pre-pandemic norms in late May, people have been sitting shoulder-to-shoulder at bars and reacquainting themselves with the communal pleasures of bending an elbow next to a like-minded stranger. A return to last call after midnight means a comeback for bar food, too, the type of greasy, substantial stuff one craves while knocking back beer, wine, or cocktails.

Around the District, that means cheeseburgers, hot wings, and pizza, sure, but also chicken tikka sandwiches, chicharrón quesadillas, batata harra-spiced fries, French onion dip toasts, smoked fish boards, Venezuelan hot dogs, Japanese rice balls, Sichuan chili wontons, and Cantonese barbecue.
